Tom Amen is a Professor of Theater Arts at Golden West College. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of California, Irvine, where he received his BA in Acting. He earned his MFA in Directing from the University of Utah, where he studied under full academic scholarship. Tom has directed over 75 productions in California, Arizona, and Utah. His favorite GWC directing credits include: The Great Gatsby, 1984, Moby Dick, A Streetcar Named Desire, Doubt, Othello, Proof, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Rashomon, Of Mice and Men, Leading Ladies, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, A Few Good Men, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Red Noses, The Liar, Medea, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lend Me a Tenor, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Hamlet, The Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible, Shadowlands, The Diviners, Oedipus Rex, and Dancing at Lughnasa. Future directing projects include Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Yankee Tavern by Steven Dietz, both of which Tom will direct in the Mainstage Theater during the 2014-2015 season.
Tom is also currently at work on several original plays, including a play based upon the life of legendary western gunslinger, John Henry “Doc” Holliday, a play based upon the life and work of Ernest Hemingway (which he is co-authoring with longtime GWC actor, Lawrence Hemingway), and a contemporary adaptation of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author. Most recently, Tom was honored along with his colleague, Martie Ramm, when the Daily Pilot newspaper named the two GWC professors 2013′s Man and Woman of the Year in Orange County Theater. Tom encourages anyone with an interest in the theater arts to get involved in the growing theater program at Golden West College.
